ART from asylum seeker detention centres goes on display at the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in Darwin this week.
Footprints of my Heart is a selection of about 60 works mostly from inside the Northern Immigration Detention Centre (NIDC) in Berrimah.
The inventive collection includes an intricate working model digger made from ice pop sticks, a margarine tub, bottle tops, and some pens.
Another piece is a model football pitch by a soccer fanatic detainee.
They are amongst sketches, sculptures, photos and poetry at the exhibit.
Exhibition curator Vikki Reily runs an art therapy group in the NIDC and helped the detainees produce the work.
“This is the new and interesting art,” she said.
“I’m sick of contemporary Australian art.
“There are no issues in it.
“Just because these people are in detention doesn’t mean they are not human beings
