KABUL, Afghanistan — Several students were reportedly injured in an explosion at the Sham-e Hidayat school and educational institution in the Dasht-e-Barchi area of western Kabul on Monday.

The blast reportedly occurred at around 4:30 p.m. local time, near the end of the school day. Local reports said several injured students were taken to Alami Hospital for treatment.

The number of casualties and the cause of the explosion had not been independently confirmed at the time of reporting. The Taliban authorities had also not publicly provided details about the incident.

Dasht-e-Barchi is a predominantly Hazara-populated area and has previously been the scene of deadly attacks targeting Hazara civilians, including students and worshippers.

ISIS-K has previously carried out attacks against Hazara communities and other civilians in Afghanistan. However, there was no confirmed information establishing responsibility for this latest explosion.

Further investigation is required to determine the cause of the blast, the full number of casualties and whether the school was deliberately targeted.
